Updated: Dec 12, 2023

Nestled amidst the picturesque landscape of Yufuin, Kinrin Lake (also known as Kinrin-ko) is a tranquil haven that offers an enchanting escape to visitors. This small lake, boasting a circumference of approximately 400 meters, is a place of breathtaking beauty, reflecting the serenity of its surroundings.

The name "Kinrin" translates to "golden scales," and legend has it that the lake was aptly named by a Confucian scholar, Mori Kuso, who was captivated by the shimmering scales of a fish leaping from the water as the sun set. This captivating story adds to the lake's mystique, making it even more alluring to those seeking a touch of magic.

Kinrin Lake transforms throughout the seasons, offering a unique experience with every visit. In spring, vibrant cherry blossoms adorn its shores, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. Summer brings lush greenery and the gentle warmth of the sun, making the lake an ideal spot for a leisurely stroll or a relaxing boat ride.

Autumn paints the surrounding mountains in a kaleidoscope of colors, reflected in the lake's calm surface. And winter brings a serene quietude, with the lake often shrouded in a blanket of mist, creating an atmosphere of ethereal beauty.

Beyond its scenic beauty, Kinrin Lake offers a glimpse into the history and culture of Yufuin. Situated at the base of the majestic Mount Yufu, the lake is considered a sacred place by the locals. Nearby, the Unagi Hime Shrine, dedicated to the goddess of fertility and agriculture, offers a glimpse into the spiritual significance of this area.
